Year 3 Block 3: Buswell's Brewery

Brand Design · Packaging · Bespoke Type · Illustration

The Buswell’s Brewery project is one that holds deep personal significance. Completed as a negotiated brief during my third block of year three, it was a rare opportunity to create something truly meaningful: a brand identity for a brewery founded and run by my own father, who is also its brewer. The goal was to honour the passion he pours into every ale he makes, while delivering a complete visual identity capable of standing confidently in a competitive craft beer market, rooted in the brewery’s heritage and independent spirit. To reflect Buswell’s Midlands canalside setting, the visual language draws from the tradition of roses and castles, the folk art style synonymous with narrowboat culture, bringing warmth, craft, and regional character to every touchpoint of the brand.

The Brand

The Typefaces

For this project, two bespoke typefaces have been created, the first, Buswells Hand, was created using the brewers handwriting as the basis to create a distinct character for the logo as well as titles and hero moments. The Buswells Serif was developed to compliment the more characterful hand type and is used for everything else that the Buswells hand is not used for.

The Iconography

Rooted in the brand’s identity, the iconography draws inspiration from traditional canal-side rose and castle art. Each beer features a bespoke icon rendered in a signature colour, which remains entirely exclusive to that specific brew’s packaging and promotional materials.
